Centaline Club Presents “The Tea House Experience” - Nearly 150 Gold Members Immerse in the Unique Charm of Cantonese Opera at the Tea House

Centaline Club Presents “The Tea House Experience” - Nearly 150 Gold Members Immerse in the Unique Charm of Cantonese Opera at the Tea House

Centaline Property and Centaline Club are committed to promoting traditional culture. Over the years, they have sponsored numerous Cantonese opera events to support the preservation and promotion of this cultural art form. These events invite Centaline Club members to appreciate the rich artistic heritage of Chinese culture. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Xiqu Centre, and Centaline Property is proud to be a supporting partner for the new season of the Tea House Theatre’s “The Tea House Experience.” In August, November, and December, three captivating performances were held exclusively for Gold Members, with nearly 150 attendees enjoying an immersive experience of the tea house opera culture, receiving widespread acclaim.

Reviving the Tea House Atmosphere at the Xiqu Centre
“The Tea House Experience” takes audiences back to the “tea house culture” of the 1990s, where patrons would enjoy dim sum alongside a day of live Cantonese opera performances. The program aims to recreate the ambience of that era. The Tea House Theatre is meticulously designed to replicate the harmonious atmosphere of traditional tea houses, where the audience sits in close proximity to the performers, allowing them to appreciate the nuances of facial expressions, gestures, and movements.

Gold Members enjoyed a unique experience, savoring tea and dim sum while watching remarkable opera performances. Accompanied by engaging and accessible explanations, even those without extensive knowledge of culture or art could appreciate the beauty of Cantonese opera and the charm of tea house culture.

Cantonese Opera Veteran Law Ka-ying Nurtures the Next Generation
Cantonese opera master Law Ka-ying has been leading the Tea House Rising Stars Troupe since 2019, serving as the artistic director of “The Tea House Experience.” This season’s repertoire included two signature pieces:
- “Rain-soaked Clothes” from A Mirror Seal - A story about a chance meeting between the protagonists and the romantic connection that gradually develops.
- “Love and Struggle” from The Warrior’s Marriage - A tale of a marriage forged under the weight of national duty and responsibilities.
Both excerpts revolve around love but explore distinct themes with profound depth.

Unlike traditional Cantonese opera performances, which typically last around three hours, “The Tea House Experience” is a 90-minute program. It features a curated mix of paiziqu, Cantonese operatic singing, excerpts from operas, instrumental music, and Cantonese opera songs, offering a condensed yet comprehensive introduction to the traditional art form.

Under the artistic guidance of Law Ka-ying, producer Naomi Chung, the young performers and musicians of the Tea House Rising Stars Troupe have been meticulously trained. Their performances achieved exceptional vocal quality, capturing the essence and emotional depth of Cantonese opera. Additionally, their precise gestures, expressions, and movements vividly brought the characters and stories to life. Through the dedicated efforts of the troupe, audiences not only enjoyed the beauty of Cantonese opera but also witnessed its ongoing development and preservation.
